Harriet Wheeler

Harriet Wheeler has been out of the public eye for quite some time now, but that doesn’t mean she’s not missed. It’s been over 10 years since their last album (wow!) yet I get more emails and comments about Harriet Wheeler and the Sundays than anyone else. If you’re ever feeling reminiscent, youtube has a great collection of Sundays interviews and videos, including their video for Summertime!  While you’re here though, why not leave some comments about Harriet and the Sundays!  Out of respect for Harriet and her family, please do not post any information on her place of employment! Any comments that do will be removed.

Concert Review

9:30 Club (Washington, DC – 12/3/97)

December 3rd, 1997 will go down as one of the best days of my life. I finally saw the Sundays in concert and they were awesome! Harriet hit every note. They performed about 17 songs (this is from memory…I wasn’t able to get my hands on a set list) including the 3 encores. Here they are in no particular order. If anyone does have the set list from the D.C. show please inform me of my errors.

Summertime
Homeward
She
What Do You Think
When I’m Thinking About You
Here’s Where The Story Ends
Can’t Be Sure
Joy
Medicine
Another Flavour
Hideous Towns
Monochrome
My Finest Hour
Goodbye
I Kicked A Boy
Turkish*
Cry

*clip from a Vancouver performance (3/15/93), not the D.C. show

The best part was that I met Harriet! After the show, I started walking to my car and noticed 3 or 4 people hanging around out front where the tour bus was so, I decided to stick around too. One of the tour members knew what was going on so he stressed to us several times that if we just stayed calm and didn’t act like maniacs they’d probably sign autographs and pose for photos.

To make a long story short, about an hour later it finally happened. They walked right out the front door and signed autographs and posed for pictures. (By this time there was a small crowd of about 20 people.) Both Harriet and David were very nice and down to earth. They were making conversation with everyone and were more than happy to sign everything and anything that was handed to them. They must have stood outside in the cold and drizzle for at least 30 minutes. I am quite happy to say I was able to get an autograph and even pose for a picture with them. Even after I got a pic with them I stuck around a while and took about 7 more pics. Of course it goes without saying I ran to the one hour photo shop the next day and got reprints in every size…5×7, 8×10, and 24×36. (Ok, I didn’t go for the poster size). All in all, it was a night I’ll never forget! More photos from the night are available at the Sirens of Song photostream on flickr.

    Someone made a comment ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7ZXh7kysjw&feature=related )
on a video on youtube and pointed out that this is David Gavurin:
    http://www.justgiving.com/davidspeedie
The picture of the old man running could be David’s father or uncle? Or is it humor and the old man represents David himself. What’s most convincing that this is David of The Sundays are the names Billie and Frank, the names of Harriet’s and David’s children.

By the way i uploaded a new video of a live performance by The Sundays, the song “I Won”, there is more to come!

Hi fellow Sundays fans, I haven’t shouted out on any of the fan sites till now, this is the first forum in which the fans don’t seem a little wiggy or rabid. I’m almost exactly Ms Wheeler’s age and when they were touring around I got to see them in my home city of New York. It’s a memory I’ll cherish forever. I’m an experienced drummer and percussionist/vocalist and I’ve seen the greatest musicians on earth perform many times. But somehow the Sundays and Harriet’s singing left me with the magic you all seem to understand, a visceral/emotional response that spoke to me on a spirit/emotion level beyond most bands. So just adding my 2 cents here and adding to the hopes that one day, some sort of new songs/recordings are made available, at least by Harriet/David if not a band reunion. Seems futile to hang on to hope but I’m staying with it. Cheers! -Gregory

I remember being in 8th or 9th grade and hearing their song “Here’s where the story ends” on the radio. I ran all the way to my friends house the next neighborhood over to tell her about it and we listened to the radio and waited to hear it again. We were absolutely smitten. Over the years I’ve seen them live several times, they’re just stunning musicians, and I have some really good memories of them. Still listen to them quite a bit, I can never get enough. One song in particular is really meaningful to me, and that is ” When I’m thinking about you”. I had gone through a really bad breakup wherein I lost all of my friends and found myself completely starting over. It was a sad, lonely time, and I remember just frantically reaching out to anyone and everyone whom I thought could be a “friend”. Then I was listening to that song, and heard the bridge where Harriet sings, “When you’re searching your soul, when you’re searching for pleasure, how often pain is all you find, but when you’re coasting along and nobody’s trying too hard, you can turn around and like where you are.” As soon as I really listened to that, a feeling of peace came over me and I knew that everything was going to be okay. I slowed down, and quit frantically searching, and just got comfortable being by myself, and everything went so much better from that time on. It was a very important turning point in my life. I actually traveled with a friend to Denver, Colorado to see The Sundays perform and was able to meet them for the second or third time and tell Harriet about that experience. She looked at me kind of strangely, but I was happy to at least be able to tell her the impact their music has had on me. Anyway, that’s all. Love, Love, LOVE them, and I hope they’ll come out with something again soon. Until then, we’ll be eagerly awaiting. :)

Discovered The Sundays in ’91… became quite the fan and learned quite a few of the songs (guitar) Formed an acoustic duo last spring and we covered ‘Here’s Where the Story Ends’, ‘You’re Not the Only one I Know’ and ‘My Finest Hour’… still working on playing out. Also doing Edie Brickell, Mazzy Star and Aimee Mann.

    Great page here.

I listened to a wonderful song the other day by Grimes (Genesis) – beautiful and I couldn’t figure out who the vocalist reminded me of – OF COURSE!!! Harriet Wheeler. I have now the blissful pleaseure of re-playing all my Sundays tunes. Heaven.

  • Kevin Barbour

Joe said he would fly overseas to see The Sundays if they performed in any of the Music Festivals in Europe…Me too…Chicago to where ever

  • Weidni

I´d wish id have the talent Harriet und David have. The songs are simply wonderful. Im sure they still make some music in their house and over the years there are some songs they composed. Maybe some day they will be released. The pressure from all their fans will be enormous. So now everybody put on “Nothing sweet” and listen carefully. What a perfect song.

@JOE: Wich name you have on youtube????

  • Joe

I still love The Sundays and listen to them often. I even had a Youtube channel dedicated to them, but I lost my password and access to my own channel. I actually had Billie’s Youtube username among my e-mails. I was reading comments under a Sundays video many years ago, and for some reason, I focused on her comment. I immediately recognized the name on her channel when I clicked on her username, and I wrote some gushy note to her about how much I loved her mom. Not exactly what a 13-year old wants to hear about her mom. :) She was gracious but curt in her reply. Then I sent her some links to Sundays bootleg concerts that I uploaded. I never did hear back from her. :( Anyway, because of her age, I never followed up. I was just happy that she was aware of our love and passion for her parents’ music.

I really wish Harriet and Dave would come back. If not produce any new music, just perform their old songs at the dozens of music festivals throughout Europe – Reading Festival, Leeds Festival, Glastonbury, or Benicassim Festival in Spain. I would fly overseas just to see them.

  • Josiah Brown

UGh! I wish harriet would have at least continued to sing on her own. I’m spoiling over the fact that I will never get to see her in concert. It’s time for a reunion tour..

  • Lisa Stanton

One of the best bands ever. Harriet is one of my favorite singers. I listen to all 3 albums of which are all terrific and I never tire of them. The Sundays are fantastic!!

  • Schaddu

Hey. where is she? Why doesn’t she and his pals come back to sing all their songs on stage now…? i mean nineties are really on the vibe now they should… and why did they split at the first place…? i mean i can understand why, they really had nothing much to say musically actually… anyways, reading, writing and arithmetics is really special for me. I discovered it in March 2010 (…!) during my journey in Ohio and Chicago for five weeks (i’m french). That will be forever the soundtrack of the other side of altantic, highways, Columbus, big spaces, and of my whole journey there…
