Harriet Wheeler

Harriet Wheeler has been out of the public eye for quite some time now, but that doesn’t mean she’s not missed. It’s been over 10 years since their last album (wow!) yet I get more emails and comments about Harriet Wheeler and the Sundays than anyone else. If you’re ever feeling reminiscent, youtube has a great collection of Sundays interviews and videos, including their video for Summertime!  While you’re here though, why not leave some comments about Harriet and the Sundays!

Concert Review

9:30 Club (Washington, DC – 12/3/97)

December 3rd, 1997 will go down as one of the best days of my life. I finally saw the Sundays in concert and they were awesome! Harriet hit every note. They performed about 17 songs (this is from memory…I wasn’t able to get my hands on a set list) including the 3 encores. Here they are in no particular order. If anyone does have the set list from the D.C. show please inform me of my errors.

What Do You Think
When I’m Thinking About You
Here’s Where The Story Ends
Can’t Be Sure
Another Flavour
Hideous Towns
My Finest Hour
I Kicked A Boy

*clip from a Vancouver performance (3/15/93), not the D.C. show

The best part was that I met Harriet! After the show, I started walking to my car and noticed 3 or 4 people hanging around out front where the tour bus was so, I decided to stick around too. One of the tour members knew what was going on so he stressed to us several times that if we just stayed calm and didn’t act like maniacs they’d probably sign autographs and pose for photos.

To make a long story short, about an hour later it finally happened. They walked right out the front door and signed autographs and posed for pictures. (By this time there was a small crowd of about 20 people.) Both Harriet and David were very nice and down to earth. They were making conversation with everyone and were more than happy to sign everything and anything that was handed to them. They must have stood outside in the cold and drizzle for at least 30 minutes. I am quite happy to say I was able to get an autograph and even pose for a picture with them. Even after I got a pic with them I stuck around a while and took about 7 more pics. Of course it goes without saying I ran to the one hour photo shop the next day and got reprints in every size…5×7, 8×10, and 24×36. (Ok, I didn’t go for the poster size). All in all, it was a night I’ll never forget! More photos from the night are available at the Sirens of Song photostream on flickr.

Saw the band years ago in Chapel Hill, North Carolina at Cats Craddle. Small and intimate venue. I can remember a few guys yelling to Harriet to marry them. I find myself listening and watching their videos on youtube at least once a week here lately. Really wish you would release some new music or visit again to North Carolina and let me cook you both an amazing dinner. Cheers for what you’ve left us so far. Daren

I just heard ‘Can’t Be Sure’ on Shaun Keavney’s BBC Radio 6 show which was a fantastic track. I’m old enough to vaguely remember The Sundays, back in the day, not as big a fan as the guys here but I did like the tracks they released. I’m now going to go and listen to their back catalogue. Just Brilliant!

Harriet’s angelic voice. All I can say.

I’ve been enjoying music by The Sundays ever since their debut. I once remarked that Harriet is the only female singer who was influenced by Rickie Lee Jones and honored her because instead of copying her style, she learned from her technique and how to sing and how to breathe life into a song using it. I would love if The Sundays released new music, but if they didn’t, their three (and only) studio albums are such a perfect set of recordings. I’m so glad they never released a live album or greatest hits or any of that nonsense. This Sundays did it right.

Hello all! I’d like to let everyone know about another small update regarding new material from The Sundays. Apparently Paul Brindley has once again confirmed that there’s new stuff in the works, no planned release yet though. I know it’s a very small update but even the smallest bit of info is a blessing when it comes to this band.

On a final note I’d like to introduce myself as I’m new here, I re-discovered The Sundays around 2015 and they’re my favorite group. I’ve been exposed to their music throughout my childhood (due to my mom’s great music taste) and listening to their albums gives me such a rush of nostalgia. I was born around 3 years after they released Static and Silence so of course I haven’t had the opportunity to see them live or even hear their music on the radio, but at least I’m able to share my interest of this band with the internet. That being said I’d like to plug my recently made subreddit devoted to The Sundays. I’m trying to share it with as many people as I can, because after all the more attention this band gets the better!

Here’s a youtube link to a couple of Sundays shows from 1997

Electric Factory 8-20-1997 Full show https://youtu.be/9frUZ5YYrJY
A fine film taped from the balcony, clear, steady and close. 69 minutes long. Stereo

The Sundays – Union Chapel 12-11-1997 Full show https://youtu.be/YmNSF2odIBg

Fantastic atmospheric venue, intimate and characterful, this complete 73 minute show was shot from above. A close, clear and steady recording. Stereo

I will also repost this link to the band Trespassers William if your looking for music that sounds like The Sundays.

  • To Monochrome, haha nice literary exercise, keep going! I actually do know
where David and Harriet live, they are married and have two kids. Harriet didn’t have to work in a bakery they were very smart business like, they left the music world with a substantial fortune.
But don’t let that spoil your creativity.

Wonderous, dreamy voice of Harriet’s and the bands guitars and it’s all ethereal as if it always was but is not there.

    Please return.

Still hoping that someday you’ll share your gift with us again…

Great news everybody! I FINALLY came across of a recent picture of Harriet and/or Dave. They did a terrific job keeping any new photos off the internet but this one seemed to slip by. it’s just Harriet, but that’s still fine with me. Maybe a recent David picture will come out soon because I’ve been curious what he looks like now too.

Harriet, and the Sundays. Please come back to us. There are so many of us who have forever been touched and blessed by your words and voice I still hear in my dreams. Your music is now being transferred down to my children who are also mesmerized by your loving voice. It would be such a pleasure to see you re group because there are many who really enjoy the band. If you do, can you please stop by the Sacramento USA area? I’d love to see you perform. Hope you and the family is doing well! Please come back! We miss you! Neil Guerrero.
