Helllooo, Kimbra!

The great thing about music is you never know who’s going to grab your attention next. Seven days ago I had never heard of Kimbra and now she’s my favorite new artist.

At the young age of 21, the New Zealand born Kimbra Johnson has already taken her homeland and Australia by storm. Her debut album, Vows, was released in late August (NZ)/early September (AUS), and soon after, she won Best Female Artist at the 2011 ARIA Awards and took home New Zealand’s 2011 Critics’ Choice Award.

Kimbra’s music is as eclectic as her list of influences (she has mentioned Outkast, Bjork, Prince, Burt Bacharach, Michael Jackson, Rufus Wainwright, and the Bird and The Bee to name a few). If you’re a fan of either Adele, Duffy, Amy Winehouse, Katy Perry, or Bjork, you’ll probably like Kimbra too.

Vows opens up with her hit single, “Settle Down,” which sounds like it could have been a bonus track on Esthero’s Wikked Lil Grrrls. Other standout tracks on her album include the Motown-inspired “Cameo Lover,” “Two Way Street,” “Limbo,” “Wandering Limbs,” and “Old Flame.” If her duet with Gotye – “Somebody That I Used To Know” – were included on the disc, that would be the cherry on top.

Vows isn’t sold in the United States yet, but there is a digital EP, Settle Down, available on iTunes and Amazon. Can’t wait for the full U.S. release? Treat yourself to a holiday gift and get the limited edition import, which also includes a bonus DVD – Live at Sing Sing.

Tracklist: Settle Down / Cameo Lover / Two Way Street / Old Flame / Good Intent / Plain Gold Ring / Call Me / Limbo / Wandering Limbs / Withdraw / The Build Up / Somebody Please (hidden track)

Live at Sing Sing DVD tracklist: Good Intent / Settle Down / Two Way Street / Plain Gold Ring / Cameo Lover
